movie roundup

fantastic four: first steps

allegedly, one of the fantastic four movies was a childhood favorite of mine (i don't want to ever fact-check this) and ebon moss-bachrach who plays "richie" in the bear is "the thing"/ben in this so i was pretty hype to watch it

i liked it. i think the aesthetics were on point, if not accurate (wouldn't know), then nice to look at. it is a little offputting and cringe at times because of how its set in a universe/world/city(??) that is extremely appreciative and accepting of what are basically freaks of nature. it is so funny how the worst of their reception is a scene with ben, who is their designated guy who goes outside because sue and reed have the baby and johnny is trying to get some alien pussy, who gets passed by two men in an alleyway that say, "what about us huh?" it goes from slightly weird to downright strange when sue gets away with a speech that doesn't end with her getting pelted by rocks. but it's fine, it's just, weird but not unwatchable

on an aspect i actually liked: the theme of women sacrificing everything for the ones they loved. ok...well i lied a little. it's badass in concept but the execution is a big ❓. when johnny confronts shalla-bal and she screeches in agony and runs off to space and when sue figures out reed is seriously planning on sac'ing the baby and... screeches in agony and runs off ........ i don't know. i don't deal with women so who am i to say it's realistic or not? and both scenes also immediately get rectified (we get to see johnny's dancing flames reflected in shalla-bal, reed finds sue, calm and with the baby, at the very spot where the baby would have to be sacrificed- it's very literal, i love it), so i can't be too mad. maybe it's just the fact that it happened twice in the same movie

last few thoughts. every shalla-bal scene was amazing, especially the ones during the chase, and oh man was she a sight to look at. the team interactions were funny and i hope they make time to have more in whatever other movies they'll be in. and ummmm well ummmmm

superman

i wish i liked this. at some point i started noticing how many jokes there were (probably the longest it could go without comedic relief is 5 minutes. i hope i'm wrong) and it "ruined the illusion" so to say. also the constant ads surrounding this and using the same scene of slo-mo superman saving that girl did not help. mister terrific was awesome though

boss baby 2 or whatever its actual title is

this and the first are truly some of the plane movies of all time. i mean i'm 80% sure i watched the first one on a plane

would be otherwise a forgettable movie if it weren't for some of the comments i read. one on letterboxd reads: "YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS *sobbing profusely* HE IS THE BABY JESUS" and its unabashedness shocked me in a way or maybe its an entirely new layer of irony above my own understanding
